Prince Harry, third-in-line-to throne, will receive his helicopter wings at a special ceremony at the Army Air Corps HQ, Middle Wallop, Hants in May as a fully qualified helicopter pilot. And its also been reported that He may will return to Afghanistan later this year.

Next month Prince Harry will be told whether his future training will be in either Lynx choppers or Apache flying gunships. Which would mean he could qualify to serve in Afghanistan, or a Lynx squadron, that could speed up his march to the front line.

The source said: “Both helicopters are very much operational and flying missions in Afghanistan. So if it isn’t all over before he graduates, he will be going back there, just as he promised.”

One aide told DailyStar reporter, He said: “There are few people around more amazed than Harry himself. But he’s worked his backside off and everyone is ­delighted with the results. He really has earned it.”

And one family friend said: “The most satisfying thing for Harry is he’s achieved this on the same level playing field as all the other ­candidates. When he’s in the air no one cares who his father is, just whether he can fly the thing ­properly.”

Harry came back from Afghanistan in 2008 over security concerns after media leaked his presence in warzone.

The 25-year-old who is currently training as a helicopter pilot and hopes to fly Apache gunships if he earns his wings in May. That would then mean he would be unable to accompany his brother William to the World Cup in South Africa.

Harry is not so worried about missing the football but the opportunity to use the trip to raise awareness of his charity work in Africa.

His Sentebale organisation, which supports children orphaned by Aids in the tiny land-locked country of Lesotho, needs all the help it can get after its accounts showed it had paid out only £84,000 of the £1.15million it had raised.

One of superiors at Middle Wallop said to Mail on Sunday newspaper, He said: “Harry has done better on his course than we were expecting and that is why the Apache is now being considered for him. You have to be able to take in a lot of information very quickly and have good situational awareness and Harry has proved that he has.

He added: “Prince Harry has a good idea that he has been shortlisted and he’s really had his head down as he has a lot of work on at the moment. His dream is to fly an Apache and we’ve told him it will all depend on how he does on the next part of the course. It certainly hasn’t been ruled out.”

If the prince does get to fly the Apache, it might mean he could return to the front line in Afghanistan, where he served in December 2008. The prince until now has been learning to fly a Lynx utility helicopter, used for support and convoy protection as well as ferrying troops around. but Apaches have a more direct combat role.

However, Prince will have to undergo another 6-8weeks of training before any decision on a helicopter is made.

The Category 1 list, which includes the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles and Prince William, remains unchanged. If they die, there will be an immediate interruption of all BBC programs with an official announcement normally via a Buckingham Palace statement.

Prince Harry now appears in a new list that includes the Pope, Muhammad Ali, Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, Gordon Brown, the Dalai Lama, Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, Nick Clegg and Bob Dylan.

Neither the BBC nor Buckingham Palace would comment on the changes last night.
